China's FM says time to boost Beijing-AU strategic cooperation has come

(MENAFN) China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized Tuesday that it is an “opportune time” to strengthen strategic mutual trust and deepen cooperation between Beijing and the African Union (AU). Speaking after visits to the AU headquarters in Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Lesotho, Wang highlighted the alignment of China, the world’s largest developing country, with the AU, representing the most developing nations regionally.

Wang said both sides should address shared challenges, safeguard their legitimate interests, and contribute to global peace and development. He stressed that China’s vast market could offer broader opportunities for Africa’s development, and called on the international community to increase investment in the continent.

He also voiced Beijing’s readiness to work with African nations to establish institutional platforms to pursue development paths suited to local needs, maximize resources, and benefit people directly. “Only when China and Africa join hands to achieve modernization, can the world attain modernization,” Wang added.

China has remained Africa’s largest trading partner for 15 consecutive years, with trade reaching $314 billion in the first 11 months of 2025. Last year also marked the 25th anniversary of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation. Wang’s visit continues a tradition of Africa being the first overseas destination for China’s foreign minister each year, now for the 36th consecutive year.
